I'm astonished that so few of you have brought up the parallels between chess and knitting in your threads on "complex patterns" and whatnot. The strategic application of one's yarn resources is not dissimilar from setting about a game of Ruy Lopez - a deliberate opening gambit, followed by judicious placement of pawns (or, I suppose, stitches), all with an eye toward exploiting the opponent's weaknesses.

Now, I've seen some amateurish attempts at "problem-solving" in this subreddit. The sort of thing where someone asks how to fix a dropped stitch or whatnot and expects a detailed tutorial on basic repair techniques. Let me disabuse you - these are trivialities better suited for a remedial craft class than for sophisticated knitters like yourselves.

When tackling complex patterns, one must consider not only the yarn itself but also its interaction with the surrounding stitches, much as in chess one considers not just your pawns and knights but how they will function together to achieve checkmate. The knitting community would do well to emulate this more... mature approach to problem-solving.

In short: I expect a higher level of sophistication from those who call themselves knitters here. If you can't handle the rigors of complex patterns, perhaps it's time for you to take up crocheting or something equally innocuous?
